When To Use This Extension
This extension is an appropriate set of editing tools to use when:
- You want to create a new parcel map (or edit any kind of data!) or edit an existing one, and you want your boundaries to be accurate.
- Your main data source for parcel boundaries is surveys, and/or you can enter the parcels (or whatever your shapes represent) on-screen using background images as a guide.
- You do not have access to or do not know how to use ARC/INFO, specifically the ArcEdit module (or prefer not to use it).
- The dataset you want to edit is fairly small. Many of the scripts in this extension (such as Builder and Unbuilder) grow exponentially slower the larger the shapefile is, and the Parcel Editor will draw larger shapefiles very slowly if you want to draw node markers (although the node drawing has been speeded up considerably in version 1.3). Naturally, the faster your computer is, the larger shapefiles you will be able to edit. This extension was designed for non-profits to track their parcels; you are not likely to be able to edit or maintain an entire town's parcel map with this extension.
This extension was developed for use with data that is stored in cartesian coordinates (for instance, state plane coordinate systems). It has not been tested on Latitude-Longitude data and some of the functions may give unpredictable results when used with such data, especially since distances relative to lat-long vary across the globe depending on your latitude. All testing was performed using MassGIS data, which is stored in MA State Plane Coordinate System Mainland NAD83 Meters.
