Parcel Editor - The Options Button and Dialog

Options… button

Clicking this button (located on the Parcel Editor dialog) opens the Options dialog (below), which allows you to set several preferences related to editing.

Show line endpoint markers:

This box is normally checked so that you will be able to see colored markers on the endpoints of lines while you are editing. These markers help you to edit because they show whether the lines join correctly at their endpoints. 'Dangles,' or lines whose endpoints are not snapped to another line's endpoint, are shown as red dots. 'Pseudonodes,' shown as light blue dots, are where two and only two lines join together (this is good, while dangles are bad). 'Single loops' are shown as green dots. These are where both of a line's endpoints attach to each other. This can be a problem when building; you should split the line somewhere to fix this. Places where three or more lines' endpoints meet are not marked (these are good). You may wish to turn off the markers by clicking the checkbox if you feel they are drawing too slowly (if you have a larger shapefile). The endpoints only draw when you are in Feature Select mode (click the Select Feature tool to enter this mode) as opposed to Vertex Edit mode (select the Vertex Edit tool to enter this mode).

Advanced User mode:

Checking this box puts you into Advanced User mode, in which you will receive fewer helpful messages about how to use the tools. It is best to stay in Regular user mode until you are very familiar with how the tools work. The benefit of the Advanced mode is that you can work faster, since you don't need to read as many message boxes. This property can also be changed on the Main Menu and on the Survey Entry dialog.

Add attributes when new line added:

This option, which is normally off, prompts you to enter attributes each time you add a new line using the Draw Line tool. You can also enter attributes for the selected lines by clicking the Attributes button on the Parcel Editor dialog.

Copy attributes when splitting a line:

When this is checked, attributes from a line will be copied to both halves when you split a line. If it is not checked, one of the halves will have blank attributes. It is generally recommended that you leave this checked.
